About the Township of Galloway:
|
The Township of Galloway is located in the northeast portion of Atlantic County, NJ and is
about 10 miles west of Atlantic City.
It is bordered: on the north by Port Republic and Burlington County; on the west by Egg Harbor City and Mullica Township;
on the south by Hamilton Township, Egg Harbor Township, and the Atlantic City International Airport; and on the east by
Absecon and the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge.
The Township occupies approximately 92 square miles and is about 85% residential.
The Township is the home to the AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center - Mainland Division, Richard Stockton College of NJ,
Renault Winery, The Seaview Marriot Resort, and the historic town of Smithville.
The township has also been designated by the NJ Pinelands Commission as a high growth area. This provided
for a 3% growth rate each year during the 1990's and continues today.
The 2000 census shows the population at 31,200.

About the GTFD:
|
The GTFD consists of a Township Fire Chief, an Administrative Assistant, three (3) fire investigators, and five (5)
independently incorporated Fire Companies.
The Chief of the Department is elected annually by representatives from all five Fire Companies and has
overall responsibility for the Township Fire Department. He/she is responsible for:
- departmental interface to the Mayor and Council members regarding budget and other matters,
- managing the Department budget and the procurement, care, and maintenance of Township owned vehicles
and equipment,
- Fire Department review of all planning and zoning projects including the location and management of hydrants,
- is the Department head for Fire Prevention, Fire Investigation, and Life Safety Inspection,
- and is the Department Public Information Officer amongst a variety of other duties.
He/she also typically serves as the Incident Commander (IC) for incidents involving two or more
Companies or incidents of high public impact or interest.
The five fire companies (Stations 26-1 through 26-5) operate out of six (6) stations located throughout the Township.
The department maintains the following apparatus:

2 Fire Investigator's Vehicles
12 Engines
3 Tankers
2 Ladders
1 Heavy Rescue Truck
2 Brush Trucks
5 Utility Trucks
There are approximately 220 volunteers total. Each company elects/appoints a Chief, Assistant Chief, Safety
Officer(s), Captains, Lieutenants, Fire Police, and administrative officers, as appropriate.
Significant concerns for the department include:
- Township is located in the Pinelands - significant Wild land-Urban Interface
- 4.9 miles (north and south) of the Garden State Parkway
- 8.25 miles of NJ Transit rail line
- 8.25 miles of the White Horse Pike (AKA: Rt. 30)
- Proximity to the Atlantic City International Airport and NJANG 177th Fighter Interceptor Group
- Richard Stockton College of New Jersey and housing for 2100 students
- AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, Mainland Division
- Betty Bacharach Rehabilitation Center
- 10 elementary schools, 1 middle school, and 1 high school
- A 3+% growth rate per year.
The department provides mutual aid to and receives mutual aid from, the following surrounding departments:
- Egg Harbor City Fire Department,
- Laureldale (Hamilton Township) Fire Department,
- Cologne (Hamilton Township) Fire Department,
- Mullica Township Fire Department,
- Atlantic City International Airport Fire Department,
- Absecon Fire Department,
- Port Republic Fire Department,
- Tanker Task Force,
- 5" Task Force
- New Jersey Forest Fire Service - Division C, and
- Burlington County
All companies are dispatched from the Galloway Township Police dispatch center, using the Atlantic County
fire dispatch frequency.
The GTFD comprises Atlantic County, NJ Fire District "F-26".
The entire department answers approximately 1100 calls for service annually.
