On The Job:

Pomona (Station 26-3), Germania (Station 26-2), and South Egg Harbor (Station 26-5) Work Fatal MVA With Entrapment And Vehicle On Fire!

17 December 2009 - At 10:39 hours, station 26-3 was dispatched to Mannheim Ave. and Duerer St. for an MVA with entrapment and vechicle on fire.  Station 26-2 and Station 26-5 weres dispatched shortly thereafter for a Landing Zone (LZ) and assistance at the scene.  First arriving units found a work van on its side and significantly involved with fire and a 2nd vehicle, with a woman trapped, nearby.  The driver of the van had extricated himself but the van fire was hampering rescue efforts of the woman who was trapped in the other car.  E26-35 along with units from Station 26-2 extinguished the fire and R26-38 extricated the woman from the 2nd car. The LZ was subsequently cancelled.  The driver of the car would later be pronounced at the hospital.  Station 26-2 and 26-5 were returned to service after about 1 hour.  Station 26-3 units were on scene for approximately 2 hours.   The GTPD, GT EMS, Paramedics also responded. to the incident.

Germania (Station 26-2) and Pomona (Station 26-3) run Kitchen Fire!

24 November 2009 - At 17:10 hours, stations 26-2 and 26-3 were dispatched to the 6200 block of Eastwood Court in the Blue Heron Pines development for a reported structure fire. C2600 assumed command and confirmed a kitchen fire. Upon arrival, Germania units made entry to the second floor apartment and quickly knocked down the fire. Ladder 36 prepared it's aerial for possible operation while Engine 35 threw a ladder to the 2nd floor. Engine 34 personnel evacuated the remainder of the building. Interior crews overhauled and checked for extension. Station 26-3 units cleared the scene around 18:00. Station 26-2 units cleared at about 18:30. No firefighter or civilian injuries were reported. The homeowner was displaced. The fire is under investigation by the Galloway Township Fire Investigations Unit. Galloway police, Galloway Township Emergency Medical Services, the township fire investigator and Atlantic City Electric also responded.

Oceanville (Station 26-1), Pomona (Station 26-3), and Bayview (Station 26-4) Participate in LDH Drill!

8 November 2009 - At approximately 08:20 hours, stations 26-1, 26-2, 26-3, and 26-4 were dispatched to the Atlantic County Utilities Authority (ACUA) for a Large Diameter Hose (LDH) drill.  A number of other fire companies from throughout the County also responded.  Once or so per year, the County conducts the drills to ensure all Companies remain familiar with procedures to laying 5" hose long distances for major fire incidents. This year, the GTFD sent E26-16, E26-35, and E26-44.  Engines first reported to a staging area until needed.   Once called, an engine connected to the hydrant.  Subsequent engines connected to the previous engine.  Each engine layed approximately 800 feet of 5" supply hose.  All units were back in service at approximately 11:30 am.

Pomona (Station 26-3) Handles MVA on GSP!

4 November 2009 - At approximately 07:51 hours, Station 26-3 (Pomona) was dispatched to mile marker 40.0 southbound on the Garden State Parkway (GSP) for an extrication assignment.  C26-300, R26-38, E26-35, U26-37, and E26-34 responded.  Upon arrival, C26-300 assumed incident command and relayed to incoming units that the vehicle was on its side in the roadway and we'd have to remove the roof.  R26-38 stabilized the SUV and the cut the roof to allow access to the patient.  E26-35 provided fire protection for the rescue team.  U26-37 and E26-34 provided additional manpower. The patient was removed, packaged, and transported to the hospital by the Galloway Twp. EMS.  The NJ State Police shut down the GSP and diverted traffic through the Atlantic City Rest Stop for the duration of the incident.  The GSP highway department also responded.  All Station 26-3 units were back in service at approximately 08:45.

Station 26-3 (Pomona) Runs Fatal MVA on Rt. 30!

17 OCTOBER 2009 - At 06:21 hours, Station 26-3 was dispatched to Rt. 30 in front of the Country Farms for an extrication assignment.  Prior to responding, dispatch informed the Station that there was a fatality.  C26-301, R26-38, E26-35, E26-34, and U26-37 responded.  Upon arrival, command confirmed the single fatality and returned E26-34, and U26-37 to service.   Remaining units stood by and waited to the ME.  R26-38 removed the driver’s side door.  Galloway Township EMS and Medic 7 also responded.   Galloway Township PD took Rt. 30 down to one lane each way for the duration of the incident.   All units returned to service at approximately 09:00.

Stations 26-2 (Germania) and 26-3 (Pomona) Run Aloe St. Extrication!

30 SEPTEMBER 2009 - At approximately 23:30 hours, Stations 26-2 and 26-3 were dispatched to Aloe St. and Robin Ln. for a reported MVA with entrapment.  C26-20, C26-21, C26-301, Engines 26-25, 26-26, 26-35, and Rescue 26-38 responded.  26-21 Assumed extrication command and notified R38 of a driver side door removal and that the airbags had deployed.  R38 removed the driver side door, cut the windshield and A post and performed a modified dash push on the driver side.  Engine 25 provided fire protection for the extrication team.   The patient was removed, packaged, and transported by the GTAS.  GTPD blocked off the road during the incident.  All units cleared the scene in about 1 hour.

GTFD holds Township Fire Chief Elections

23 SEPTEMBER 2009 - As per Township of Galloway ordinance, the GTFD annually elects one of their own to serve as Township Fire Chief.

This year, the GTFD Township Chief election was held on 8 September 2009.

This year, representatives from each of the five individually incorporated fire companies, met at Station 26-4 (Bayview) to cast their ballots.

Germania Chief Ron Garbutt, Jr. was elected Township Chief, for 2010.

Chief Calimer has served as Township Chief since June, 2006 and was not seeking re-election.

On behalf of the entire GTFD and residents of the Township of Galloway, we thank both incoming and outgoing Chiefs for their dedication, leadership, and your countless hours serving your community in this capacity!

GTFD CONDUCTS MOVING 9/11 MEMORIAL CERMONIES!

15 SEPTEMBER 2009 - Despite inclimate weather, Galloway's Bravest conducted moving 9/11 Memorial Cermemonies on Friday, September 11, 2009 at 7:00 pm.

Due to the weather, ceremonies were moved from Patriot Lake and were held at the nearby Beacon Angelical Church

Ceremonies featured Mr. Howard Berchtold as the MC, "the Striking of Four Fives", music from the Atlantic City Sandpiper Pipes & Drum Band, music selections from several Absegami HS students, remarks from members of the GTFD, GTAS, and GTPD, a musical selection by the Absegami High School Chorus, benediction by Father Mike Matveenko of Church of the Assumption, and Taps by Pomona Firefighter Joseph Ward.

Nearly 300 people attended.

May God bless and keep our brethren FDNY firefighters and families of those who paid the ultimate price.

Germania (Station 26-2) Defends County Firefighters’ Championship Title!

13 AUGUST 2009 – The Germania (Station 26-2) Volunteer Fire Company repeated as winners of the Atlantic County Firefighters Championship at the 4-H Fair Friday night.  Looking to defend the 2008 winning performance, the team consisted of: Lt. Chris Hall, Firefighters Brian Garbutt, TJ Hanggeli, Steve Burrows, and Jr. Firefighter Brad Miller.

The events were similar to last year’s competition, including the Reverse Hose Relay, the obstacle course, and a crowd favorite, the Water Rocket.

In all, Germania completed a sweep of the three events en route to its second championship in a row.

The Germania Fire Company thanks all the fans who came out to support the firefighters and cheer on our community’s bravest!

Two Vying for Chief of GTFD!

12 AUGUST 2009 - Two of Galloway's Bravest have decided to run for Chief of the Galloway Township Fire Department.

Chief Ron Garbutt, Jr. of Germania (Station 26-2) and Chief Amor "Skip" Portale of Pomona (Station 2-3) have thrown their helmets into the ring.  Current GTFD Chief, Rodney Calimer has decided to step down.

The line officers from each of the five fire companies choose the Township Chief each year.

This year, the election will be held on 8 September 2009.

The GTFD Chief's term runs from 1 January to 31 December.  The September election provides for a transition period.

Good luck to both highly qualified gentlemen!

GTFD Participates in National Night Out

4 AUGUST 2009 - From 18:00 - 21:00, a number of fire appparatus, from all five fire companies, were on display for the public at the municipal complex.  Apparatus included engines, tower ladders, tankers, brush trucks, and several antiques.

Germania (Station 26-2) provided the hose for the children to squirt the "house on fire".

Bayview (Station 26-4) set up a landing zone (LZ) and safely landed a Medivac Helicopter.

Each of the five Fire Companies chipped in to rent the fire department bouncy house.

Members were on hand to answer questions from the publc regarding the apparatus.

Fire Chief hats and fire prevention information was also handed out.

Station 26-3 (Pomona) Works MVA at Rt. 30 and Pomona Rds.

3 JULY 2009 - At 16:21 hours, Station 26-3 was dispatched to Rt. 30 and Pomona Rds. for an MVA with entrapment and vehicle overturned.  A landing zone assignment was also requested.  Chief 301, Rescue 38, and Engine 35 responded to the scene.  Engine 34 responded to the former Church of the Assumption athletic fields for the LZ.  While the vehicles were not in the roadway, the MVA had taken down a traffic light that was laying across both west bound lanes of Rt. 30.  Upon arrival, Chief 301 assumed extrication command.   It was determined that there was one patient trapped in the overturned vehicle which was laying on top of the traffic light base.  Rescue 38 proceeded to stabilize and de-energize the vehicle.  Rescue 38 then removed the driver side door.  Engine 35 provided fire protection with a charged 1 3/4" line.  The patient was removed, packaged, and transported to the waiting Southstar helicopter where they were transported to a trauma center.  Rescue 38 and Engine 34 cleared the scene shortly thereafter.  Engine 35 remained on scene until NJ DOT workers arrived to shut the power off to the downed traffic light and the vehicle was righted and removed.  The Galloway Township Police had shut down most of the intersection for the duration of the incident.  Chief 301 and Engine 35 cleared the scene at approximately 19:00 hours.

Station 26-4 (Bayview) Houses Tower 49!

14 JUNE 2009 - Members of the Bayview Vol. Fire Co. (Station 26-4) formally housed their new KME 102' platform, Tower 49, today.

Festivities began at approximately 13:00 hours with a small parade down 6th Ave. from Tess Conover Dr. to the 6th Ave. station  Members marched in full dress uniform in front of the new Tower 49, which was driven by Company President Rick Smith.

The truck was blessed by the Rev. Thomas Sweeny.

Chief Joe Blazo broke a bottle of champagne on the front bumper.

The members then ceremoniously pushed the new 2008 ladder truck into it's bay.

The celebration included a live band and a bouncy firetruck for the kids.

Refreshments included soda, beer, and food provided by Outback Steakhouse!

Congratulations and best wishes to the Officers and Members of the Bayview Vol. Fire Co. (Station 26-4).

A sincere Thank You for a job well done to the apparatus committee who spent countless hours working on the truck.

The event was well attended.

Thanks very much to the Galloway Township Police Department for blocking off 6th Ave. for the parade and to the Police Explorers for handling the parking duties.

Station 26-3 (Pomona) Works Coin Drop at Pomona and Jim Leeds Rds.

6 JUNE 2009 - At approximately 09:00 hours, members from Station 26-3 conducted their semi-annual coin drop.  The company conducts the coin drops as it does not have the wherewithal to conduct breakfasts, dinners, or other similar fundraisers.  Members responded to a pole fire during the fund raiser.   The Company thanks all of those who supported us today!  Members were out at the intersection until 16:00 or so.

Station 26-3 (Pomona) Makes Quick Knock Down!

23 MAY 2009 - At approximately 21:42 hours, Stations 26-3 and 26-2 were dispatched to what would become 438 S. Upas Ave. for a reported structure fire.  Upon arrival, Chief 300 reported fire and smoke showing from the second floor and requested a FAST team and cover up for Station 26-3.  All occupants had safely evacuated the home.  Station 26-5 covered Station 26-3 during the incident.  Engine 35 established a water supplly from the hydrant at Upas and Hayes Aves.  Engine 35 made entrance through the front door.  The engine crew searched all bedrooms for fire before finding a small contents fire in the A side bedroom.  Ladder 36 established a 2nd method of egress with its aerial and provided positive pressure ventilation when requested.  Station 26-4's FAST team was cancelled prior to arrival.  Station 26-2 was returned to service after about 1 hour into the incident.   The fire is under investigation by the Galloway Township Fire Investigators Office.  All Station 26-3 units were back in service by 00:15 hours.

Station 26-3 (Pomona) Runs Extrication on Rt. 30 & Assumption School

22 MAY 2009 - At approximately 08:45 hours, Station 26-3 was dispatched to Rt. 30 & Church of the Assumption for an MVA with entrapment.  C26-300, Rescue 38, and Engine 35 responded.  Shortly thereafter, Station 26-3 was dispatched for an LZ assignment at the church.  Upon arrival, command found 1 person trapped in a vehicle that had been hit from behind.  R38 Removed both driver side doors and the B post.  The LZ was subsequently cancelled by EMS.  The patient was subsequently removed and transported to the hospital by Galloway EMS.  GTPD shut down Rt. 30 for the duration of the incident.  Station 26-3 units operated for approximately 1 hour.

All Five Stations Attend Atlantic City Electric First Responder Safety Training

11 MAY 2009 - At 19:00 hours, members representing all five GTFD fire companies attended electrical hazard safety hazard training conducted by several members of Atlantic City Electric.

The training was conducted at the Galloway municipal complex.

Firefighters learned the dangers of downed power lines, pulling meters, entering substations, etc.   They also learned just how their turnout gear and other firefighting equipment would fare against electricity.

Several demonstrations drove home the dangers of live power lines to First Responders.  A Powerpoint presentation was also conducted inside council chambers.

The entire GTFD thanks the members of the local IBEW for their time and expertise!

Members cleared the complex at approximately 20:30 hours.

Station 26-1 (Oceanville) Bids Received For New Engine

11 MARCH 2009 - GTFD Chief Calimer announced today that Station 26-1 (Oceanville Vol. Fire Co.) has received bids for their new engine.

Bids will be opened during the March 24, 2009 Galloway Township Council meeting.

Station 26-4 (Bayview) Announces Housing For Tower 49

10 MARCH 2009 - Station 26-4 (Bayview Vol. Fire Co.) announced today that it will be holding a housing for their new 2008 KME rear-mounted platform, Tower 49.

Entire GTFD Summoned to Structure Fire During Nor'easter Snow Storm

2 MARCH 2009 - At 09:20, Station 26-3 (Pomona) and Station 26-2 (Germania) were dispatched to a resident reported structure fire at 401 South Pomona Rd.

Responding firefighters dealt with nearly a foot of snow that had fallen over night and was still falling.

Station 26-4 (Bayview) was subsequently requested as the FAST Team.

Within a half hour of the initial alarm, the Incident Commander requested a General Alarm, bringing the remaining 2 GTFD companies to the scene..   Cover up assignments were also requested for all 5 stations.

First arriving Pomona units began an offensive interior attack, with heavy smoke and fire in the basement.  Due to the structure's balloon construction which allowed the fire to spread within the walls, conditions changed quickly.  All interior operations stopped and the evacuation signal was given.

Defensive exterior operations commenced utilizing 2 aerial master streams snd several hand lines and a deluge gun.

During the attack, the 1st floor collapsed and 3 firefighters were injured. 2 were transported by ambulance to Atlanticare Mainland Div and 1 to Atlanticare Trauma Center.

The home was completely destroyed and an excavator was requested to knock the structure down due to the unsafe condition.

Neighboring companies provided cover-up for the Galloway Stations.

Units stayed on location into the night to extinguish any remaining fire.

Pomona Rd was closed during the fire along with Koch Ave.

The fire is under investigation by the Galloway Twp. Fire Investigation Unit.

Other responding agencies included:  Galloway Twp. Police, Galloway Twp. EMS, Galloway Twp. Fire Investigation Unit, Red Cross, Atlantic City Electric, South Jersey Gas, Atlanticare EMS and Paramedics.

Asst Chief 26-31 was the Incident Commander for the fire.

Station 26-2 (Germania) Works 40 Acre Woods Fire

12 FEBRUARY 2009 - At approximately 16:30 hours, Station 26-2 (Germania) was alerted to a reported woods fire in the area of Leipzig Ave. and Leibig Ave.

Upon arrival, Asst. Chief 26-21 requested station 26-3 (Pomona), Station 26-5 (South Egg Harbor), and the NJ State Forest Fire Service.  Station 18-5 (Hamilton Twp, Cologne) was subsequently requested to cover Station 26-2.

Approximately 40 acres were burnt in the fire which was fanned by 30 - 40 mph winds.

Fire units responded to protect homes in the area.

The NJ State Forest Fire Service was able to contain the blaze.

No homes were damaged. However, a fence was damaged.

The fire may have started due to an electrical issue with a pole.

The fire was placed under control within an hour.  Units remained on location for several hours.

No firefighter or civilian injuries were reported.

Chief Ron Garbutt (26-20) was the Incident Commander for the fire.

GTFD Handles Early Morning Working Structure Fire

1 FEBRUARY 2009 - At approximately 05:22 hours, Station 26-4 (Bayview) and Station 26-1 (Oceanville) were alerted to a working structure fire at 60 Mattix Run.  Shortly thereafter, Station 26-3 (Pomona) was requested for the FAST team.

First arriving units found fire through the roof of the third story end unit.

Crews initially began the attack with 2 - 1 3/4 and a 2 1/2 handlines. Tower 49 was subsequently put into operation and completed the knockdown.

Shortly into operations, Station 26-3 (Pomona) was requested for a 2nd FAST team as the first team was placed in operation. This request brought Ladder 36 and Rescue 38.

All utilities to the building were shut off and all residents were safely evacuated.

No civililan or firefighter injuries or fatalities were reported.

Station 21 (Port Republic) covered Station 26-1, Station 8 covered Station 26-4A, and Station 26-2 covered Station 26-3 during the incident.

An EMS task force was requested.  Galloway Twp PD, Galloway Twp road dept, Galloway Twp Fire Investigators, the Red Cross, and Salvation Army also responded.

Bayview units were on scene until approximately 10:00 am for salvage and overhaul operations.

Station 26-4 (Bayview) Chief Blazo was the Incident Commander.

Station 26-4 (Bayview) And Station 26-3 (Pomona) Extricate 4 From GSP Wreck

24 JANUARY 2009 - At approximately 07:50 hours, Station 26-4 (Bayview) was called to a motor vehicle crash at 40.4 northbound on the Garden State Parkway (GSP) for an extrication.

Shortly therafter, Station 26-3 was requested to provide a Landing Zone (LZ) for the Southstar medivac helicopter at the Atlantic City Rest Stop.

Rescue 26-38 was subsequently requested at the scene due to the difficulty of the extrication.

A total of 4 patients were removed from the vehicle.  2 patients were flown in 2 different helicopters to nearby Trauma Centers.

EMS units from Galloway Twp, Hamilton Twp, and Absecon responded to the incident.

All units cleared the scene at approximately 10:00 am.

Pomona (Station 26-3) Vol. Fire Co. receives Homeland Security Grant

23 JANUARY 2009 - Pomona (Station 26-3) Vol. Fire Co. has received a grant from the Department of Homeland Security.

The grant, in the amount of $132.335.00, is being used to purchase 22 new 4.5 air packs, upgrade 8 existing air packs, and a purchase and install a new 6000 P S I cascade system.

The equipment has been ordered and should be delivered shortly.

This is the first grant that the company has received.

Germania (Station 26-2) wins the Atlantic County Firefighters competition at the 4-H Fair...

8 AUGUST 2008 - Station 26-2 won the Atlantic County Firefighters' competition at the 4-H Fair.   Four teams competed: Laureldale, Weymouth, Mays Landing, and Germania.

There were three events: A reverse hose relay; Skills Medley, which included donning PPE and Airpacks, crawling, climbing a ladder, carrying a dummy in a stokes basket, and nozzle skills; and water rocket event.

Laureldale won the first event; Germania won the second event, and Weymouth won the third event.

Multiple GTFD Companies and Absecon FD Handle MVA...

13 AUGUST 2008 - At approximately 05:15, Stations 26-1 and 26-3 were dispatched to Pitney Rd. in the area of Collins Rd. for a reported motor vehicle crash.  Shortly thereafter, Station 8 (Absecon FD) was also called for mutual aid.

C26-10 assumed incident command.  Station 26-1 units provided fire protection and vehicle fluid mitigation.

Upon arrival, C26-300 assumed Extrication Operations and reported one victim trapped in each of the two vehicles.  Both vehicles required door removal and dash displacement.

Soon after, Station 26-4 was dispatched to the Galloway Township municipal complex for a Helicoper Landing Zone assignment.  The location was later moved to the Pitney Rd. ball fields.

R26-38 removed the the driver's side door and displaced the dashboard on vehicle one. Rescue 8 removed the doors, displaced the dashboard, and rolled back the roof the second vehicle.

No other civilian or firefighter injuries were reported.

Units were on scene for approximately 1.25 hours and cleared shortly after 06:30.

South Egg Harbor (Station 26-5) Makes Quick Knockdown at Structure Fire...

24 JULY 2008 - At 15:11 hours, Station 26-5 was dispatched to the 1300 block of West Aloe St, a mutli-unit apartment complex, for a reported structure fire.

First arriving units confirmed an apartment fire.    The initial crew entered the apartment and quickly knocked down the fire.  The fire was declared under control in 10 minutes.   The apartment sustained fire, heat and smoke damage.

The occupant was home at time of fire and was unable to return to apartment at this time.

Egg Harbor City (Station 10) also assisted with the incident.

Crews remained on location to ensure the fire did not spread into adjoining areas and to ventilate the apartment.

The Galloway Twp Ambulance Squad, Galloway Twp. Police Dept., and Galloway Twp. Fire Investigation Unit also responded to the incident.

The cause is unknown at this time and is being investigated by the Galloway Twp. Fire Investigation Unit.

No civilian or firefighter injuries were reported.

Units were on scene for approximately 2 hours and cleared shortly after 17:00

Stations 26-4 and 26-3 Work Motor Vehicle Crash...

5 JULY 2008 - At 01:10 hours, Stations 26-4 and 26-3 were requested for an extrication assignment at the White Horse Pike and Third Ave. in the Absecon Highlands section of the Twp.

Upon arrival, command requested R26-38 cut the door off of one the vehicles. 26-4 personnel assisted with vehicle stabilization and de-energization. 26-4 and 26-3 personnel assisted EMS with patient removal, packaging, and loading into the ambulances. E26-35 was assigned to provide fire protection, via a charged 1 3/4", for the rescue team.

The Galloway Twp Ambulance Squad and Galloway Twp. Police Dept. also responded to the incident.

All units cleared the scene just before 02:00 hours.

GTFD Keeps Busy with Motor Home Fire...

26 JUNE 2008 - At approximately 22:45 hours, Stations 26-4, 26-1, and 26-3 responded to a reported camper fire at the Shady Pines Campground.

The first arriving firefighters found a motor home fully involved in fire.  Crews had the fire under control within 30 minutes. 3 trailers and a pickup truck, which were near the fire scene sustained minor heat damage.

A total of 25 firefighters responded with 5 engines.

The Galloway Twp Ambulance Squad, Galloway Twp. Police Dept., and Galloway Twp. Fire Investigation Unit also responded to the incident.

At this time the fire is under investigation by the Galloway Twp Fire Investigation Unit.

No civilian or firefighter injuries were reported.

All units cleared the scene at around 01:30.

Pomona (Station 26-3) and Germania (Station 26-2) Standby at Atlanticare Regional Medical Center...

12 JUNE 2008 - At approximately 15:00 hours, Pomona (Station 26-3) and Germania (Station 26-2) responded to the Atlanticare Regional Medical Center for an emergency standby.

Pomona responded 1 engine and Germania responded their tanker.  Upon units arrival it was found that both Atlanticare Regional and Bacharach Rehabilitation Hospital lost all water pressure.  The sprinkler systems were not functioning and units were there in the event of a fire.

Units were on location for 2 hours while NJ American Water and hospital workers attempted to correct the problem.  Water pressure levels were raised enough to facilitate both buildings.

All units cleared the scene at around 17:00.

Bayview (Station 26-4) and Oceanville (Station 26-1) run Seaview Marriot Hotel...

8 JUNE 2008 - At 14:35 hours, Bayview (Station 26-4) and Oceanville (Station 26-1) Fire Companies were dispatched to the Seaview Marriott Hotel for an activated fire alarm.

After a brief investigation and contact with Seaview staff, it was determined that there was smoke in the basement.

Shortly thereafter, Absecon City (Station 8) Fire Company's ladder was requested.  Pomona (Station 26-3) responded as the FAST Team.   In addition Port Republic (Station 21) was requested to cover Station 26-1.

Other responding agencies included The Galloway Twp Police, Galloway Twp EMS, Egg Harbor Twp EMS, and Absecon City EMS, South Jersey Gas Co. and Atlantic County Dept. of Health.

Firefighters went to the basement to find a problem with a boiler.  The coating on the pipes was melting and high heat was found in the basement.   Other crews assisted in the evacuation of the building.  Crews found the piping to be glowing all the way to the roof of the building from the high heat that was being put off from the boiler. Crews checked the building to ensure that there was no fire spread into the building.  Crews remained on scene to ventilate the smoke that was in the building.

Firefighters had to deal with the unusually high temperatures and humidity so additional firefighters were brought in to relieve the initial crews.

The incident was declared under control at 15:30.

Employees and guests were able to re-enter the building when crews finished.

No civilian or rescue personnel injuries were reported.

All units cleared the scene at around 17:00.

Germania (Station 26-2) and Pomona (Station 26-3) Respond to Interesting Extrication...

3 JUNE 2008 - At 00:02 hours, stations 26-2 and 26-3 were dispatched to Frankfurt Ave. in the area of Duerer St. for a motor vehicle accident extrication assignment.

First arriving units found a vehicle off the side of the road into a ditch filled with about two feet of water with a number of tree limbs covering the front of the vehicle.

Units removed the tree limbs and the vehicle roof.

Once the victim was removed, he was flown to a local trauma center.

No other civilian or rescue personnel injuries were reported.

All units cleared the scene at around 01:00.

3 Stations Run Health Center at Galloway Structure Fire...

30 MAY 2008 - Shortly after 11:00 am, Stations 26-3, 26-2, and 26-4 responded to Health Center at Galloway, one of Galloway Township's five nursing homes, for multiple reports of a structure fire on the third floor.

Upon arrival, Chief 26-20 assumed command.  After a short investigation, Chief 26-20 reported that the fire was out and that all incoming units could slow their reponse.

One of the center's air conditioner units had caught fire.  Smoke had found it's way into the third floor.   Units ventilated the third floor and checked for fire extension.

Units were on scene approximately 2 hours.

2 minor civilian injuries were reported.

Bayview (Station 26-4) and Oceanville (Station 26-1) Respond to Fully Involved Garage Fire

9 APRIL 2008 - At 13:30 hours, Stations 26-4 and 26-1 were dispatched to the 200 block of Jimmie Leeds Rd.  Upon arrival, units found a detached garage fully involved.  Firefighters encountered propane bottles burning as well as a car that was inside of the garage.   The building was heavily damaged by the fire and was knocked down for safety purposes. The fire is under investigation by the Galloway Township Fire Investigation Unit.    Jimmie Leeds Rd was closed to traffic during the fire. Firefighters were on scene for approx. 3 hours.    Pomona (Station 26-3) served as the FAST team while South Egg Harbor (Station 26-5) responded their portable cascade unit.    Station 26-2 (Germania) covered Station 26-3 and Absecon (Station 8) covered Station 26-4 during the incident.    Galloway Twp Police, EMS, and the GTFD Fire Investigation Unit also responded.    No injuries were reported.

Pomona (Station 26-3) Runs Double Fatal on GSP

4 APRIL 2008 - At 01:51 hours, during moderate rain, Station 26-3 was dispatched to 47 southbound on the Garden State Parkway (GSP) for an extrication assignment.  C26-300, R26-38, U26-37, E26-35 and L26-36 responded.  Upon arrival, C26-300 assumed command and due to the nature of the accident, slowed all incoming units.  R26-38 and E26-35 units searched nearby with flashlights and thermal cameras to ensure everyone was accounted for.  R26-38 and E26-35 provided post accident lighting during the investigation.  R26-38 and E26-35 personnel assisted the Medical Examiner's office.  E26-35 assisted with cleaning the debris from both lanes of the GSP.  
Station 26-2 (Germania) covered Station 26-3 until L26-36 and U26-37 returned to service.
Units were on scene for nearly 4 hours and were back in service by 06:00 hours.

Germania (Station 26-2) and Pomona (Station 26-3) Conduct Live Burn Exercises

16 MARCH 2008 - Stations 26-2 and 26-3 conducted live burn exercises at the Atlantic County Fire Academy.  Station 26-2 brought their new E26-26.  The training was aimed toward the newer members.  Firefighters experienced a number of evolutions. These included:  Basement fire, single room fire, mulitiple room fire, and standpipe operations.

South Egg Harbor (Station 26-5) Vol. Fire Co. Conducts RIT Drill

24 FEBRUARY 2008 - Station 26-5 conducted a RIT/Profile drill a their station.  The members were challenged to enter the maze with full PPE/SCBA, with the mask blanked out.  The maze consisted of a wall breach, elevated obstacle, SCBA profile through a 16" x 15.5" tunnel, traverse through wires, and rescue a simulated downed firefighter.

GTFD Conducts Annual Refresher Training

26 JANUARY 2008 - At 8:00 am, about 100 GTFD firefighters attended the Annual Refresher Training Day.

This year's training was hosted by Marriot's Seaview Resort and Spa.

The training sessions included:  HazMat Awareness, CBRN Refresher, and Sexual Harrassment Training.

Much of the training was provided by the Atlantic County Office of Emergency Management.

AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center nurses were also on hand to provide blood screening services for firefighters who wanted it.  

The GTFD would like to sincerely thank Marriot's Seaview Resort and Spa for their hospitality.

We would also like to sincerely thank AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center nurses who volunteered their time to be with us and the Atlantic County Office of Emergency Management.

Stations 26-2 (Germania) And 26-3 (Pomona) Run Working Car Fire

7 DECEMBER 2007 - At approximately 18:00 hours, Stations 26-2 and 26-3 were dispatched to a reported vehicle fire in the Blue Heron Pines section of the Township.  The caller (owner) reported that the fire had been extinguished.

C26-20, C26-21, E-25, E-26, U-28, C26-300, and E26-35 responded. Upon arrival, C26-20 assumed command and found and reported that the vehicle was fully involved!

E26-25 extinguished the blaze.  E26-35 supplied E26-25 with water and opened the hood with the Jaws of Life to check for extension.  U26-28 provided lighting. for the incident.

No injuries were reported.  The vehicle was a total loss.

Units were on scene for approximately 45 minutes.

Galloway's Bravest Participate in 9/11 Ceremonies

11 SEPTEMBER 2007 - At 12:00 hours, the Township of Galloway conducted it's 6th annual 9/11 Ceremonies at Patriot Lake at the Township's Municipal Complex.

The event included a number of speeches by elected officials as well as several musical numbers.

Representatives from each of the five GTFD fire companies attended as well as participated in the annual event.

Chief Ron Garbutt (Germania, Station 26-2) rang the bell in honor of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice that day.

Assistant Chief Winneberger (Bayview, Station 26-4) spoke on behalf of the GTFD and discussed the brotherhood/sisterhood in the Fire Service and the country.

Captain Joseph Ward (Pomona, Station 26-3) played Echo Taps.

Mr. Howard Berchtold (South Egg Harbor, Station 26-5) led those in attendance in the singing of the National Anthem.

GTFD representatives saluted during the Pledge of Allegiance.

A number of GTFD apparatus were present.

Station 26-3 and Station 26-2 called to RSC's Police Station

29 AUGUST 2007 - At approximately 21:30 hours, Stations 26-2 and 26-3 were requested to respond to Richard Stockton College's police station for a smell of smoke.

C26-300, E26-35, L26-36, C26-21, E26-24 and E26-25 responded.

Station 26-2 units staged in front of the nearby maintenance building.

While E26-35 investigated the interior, L26-36 deployed the aerial to the roof.  The roof was checked with a thermal camera.  Nothing was found.

It was determined to be a burnt air conditioner belt.

No further action was taken.

Station 26-2 units were returned to service shortly before Station 26-3.

Units were on scene for approximately 30 minutes.

GTFD Participates in Galloway's National Night Out

7 AUGUST 2007 - The GTFD was well represented at Galloway's National Night Out.  A number of members of the GTFD took time out of their busy schedules to bring a number of pieces of fire apparatus to the event for the public to inspect.

Station 26-1 brought their tanker; Station 26-2 brought their brand new 2 day old pumper; Station 26-3 brought their quint; Station 26-4 brought their ladder and also answered an alarm during the event, and Station 26-5 brought their brand new cascade trailer.

The Forest Fire Service was in attendance as well.

Even Sparky made a guest appearance.

The event is held each year at the Galloway Township Municipal complex from approximately 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm.

Galloway's Bravest Battle Flames and Heat

MEMORIAL DAY 2007 - At 14:33 hours, stations 26-3 (Pomona) and 26-4 (Bayview) were requested to respond to a reported structure fire on the 300 block of Poplar Ave.

First arriving units encountered heavy flames and smoke coming from the front of the house.  There was also a vehicle in the garage.

Station 26-2 (Germania) was requested as the FAST team.

The fire was initially knocked down using ladders 26-36 and 26-48's master streams.  Several hand lines were then deployed to fully extinguish the blaze.

Galloway Twp EMS responded.  Absecon EMS also responded and deployed their rehab unit due to the high temperature and humidity.  A number of neighbors generously provided water and Gatorade to the firefighters as well.

The Red Cross was requested to assist the home owner.

No firefighter injuries were reported.  At least one civilian injury was reported.

Stations 26-3 and 26-4 were on scene for approximately 3.5 hours.

GTFD Attends Annual Memorial Day Services

28 MAY 2007 - About 30 members of the GTFD attended the service.  Each of the five Companies were represented.  A number of Germania (Station 26-2) Volunteer Fire Company Laidies' Auxiliary were also in attendance.

The service is held annually each Memorial Day at Germania Cemetery.  

After singing the National Anthem and reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, the members listened to a speech given by a Captain in the United States Navy.

Afterward, a number of wreaths were placed, including one by GTFD members, to honor and remember those who have given their lives so that the rest of us may be free.

MVA at the intersection of Liebig St. and Vienna Ave.

28 APRIL 2007 - At approximately 0850 hours, Stations 26-3 (Pomona) and 26-2 (Germania) were dispatched to Liebig St. and Vienna Ave. for an MVA with entrapment.

C2600, C26-20, E26-24, E26-25, U26-28, C26-300, R26-38, E26-35, responded.

Upon arrival, C2600 establlished Incident Command.  Upon realizing there was a fatality, Command slowed all incoming units.

All units stood by while waiting for the ME.

Afterwards, 26-3 units removed the room and both passenger side doors.

Units were on scene until 12:00 hours.

MVA on the Rt. 30

18 APRIL 2007 - At approximately 1910 hours, Station 26-3 (Pomona) was dispatched to Rt. 30 (White Horse Pike) in the area of Dante Ave. for a motor vehicle accident standby with wires down.

C26-300, E26-35, R26-38, and U2637 responded.

Upon arrival, C26-300 establlished Incident Command.  Command requested that the vehicle be stabilized and de-engergized as the patiient was still in the vehicle.

In order to remove the patient safely, the driver side door was cut off using the Jaws of Life.

Units were on scene until 20:00 hours.

MVA on the Garden State Parkway involving NJ Governor

12 APRIL 2007 - At approximately 1800 hours, the Stations 26-3 (Pomona) and 26-4 (Bayview) were requested to respond to the GSP for a motor vehicle accident.

The companies assisted in removing a door from the involved vehicle and set up a landing zone (LZ). Injured in the crash was NJ Governor Corzine.

GTFD units were on scene until 22:30 hours.

Mock Crash/DUI at Richard Stockton College of NJ

8 MARCH 2007 - At approximately 1630 hours, Station 26-3, along with Galloway Twp EMS and Richard Stockton Police conducted a Mock Motor Vehicle Accident/DUI stop with extrication and patient removal.

With Spring Break coming, several student groups along with cooperation of the Richard Stockton College Public Safety Department conducted the exercise at the K Building Circle.

The hope was to convince students to think twice before drinking and driving.

Several students volunteered to act as victims.

Stockton PD responded just like an actual MVA.  They provided first aid and crowd control.   They also processed the alleged "DUI" driver.

Galloway Twp EMS triaged, treated, and transported the victims.

Station 26-3 (Pomona) performed the extrication and assisted EMS with patient removal and transport.

Units were on location for approximately 90 minutes.

General Alarm fire on Liebig St.

7 MARCH 2007 - At approximately 1430 hours, Stations 26-3 and 26-2 were dispatched to 142 Liebig St. for a reported structure fire.

First arriving police officers reported a fully involved structure.

Station 26-4 was requested for a FAST team assignment.  While enroute, station 26-4 was called in for the 3rd alarm and Station 26-1 was requested for a FAST team assignment.  Station 26-5 was called to the scene for the 5th alarm.

Upon arrival, Engine 35 laid a 4" supply line down the driveway and initiated attack with a 2 1/2" protecting the garage.  As additional units arrived, water supply was established and an additional 2 1/2" and 2-1 3/4" lines was also deployed.

Absecon FD, Egg Harbor City FD, and Cologne FD were called in for cover ups.

The house was a total loss but the attached garage was saved.  No one was home at the time.   However, the family pet was lost in the fire.

Station 26-2 units provided additional lighting during overhaul.

Galloway Twp PD closed Liebig St.for the duration of the incident.  Galloway Twp EMS were on scene as well.

The Salvation Army was on scene to provide refreshments to firefighters.  The Red Cross was also called to provide assistance to the the owners.

At least one minor firefighter injury was reported.

Stations 26-2 and 26-3 were on scene for approximately 6 hours.

All units were back in service shortly after 2200 hours.

Rt. 30 & Cologne Ave. Motor Vehicle Accident:

1 MARCH 2007 - At approximately 2000 hours, Stations 26-2 and 26-3 were dispatched to Rt. 30 just west of Cologne Ave. for a reported Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA), overturned vehicle, with entrapment.

E26-25, U26-27, C-2600, C26-300, R26-38, U26-37, and E26-35 responded.

Upon arrival, C26-300 assumed Incident Command and informed incoming units that there was one vehicle on its roof with one person trapped.  There was also another vehicle involved.

R26-38 stabilized and de-energized the vehicle.  The driver's side doors were then removed.   E26-35 stretched and charged a 1 3/4" hose line to protect the extrication team.

The victim was then backboarded, removed from the vehicle, and transported to the hospital by Galloway Twp EMS.

Station 26-2 units stood by and assisted the police with post accident lighting.

Galloway Twp PD provided excellent traffic control and safe work zone for the duration of the incident.

Stations 26-2 and 26-3 were on scene for approximately 60 minutes.

All units were back in service shortly after 2100 hours.

Pomona Campground Structure Fire:

21 JANUARY 2007 - At 0126 hours, Stations 26-3 and 26-2 and F2600 were dispatched to a reported possible structure fire in the Pomona Campground (there are no hydrants in the campground).

Shortly thereafter, F2600 arrived and reported a fully involved structure.  The structure turned out to be a 5th wheel trailer type with nearby exposures on the B, C, and D sides with a sizeable propane tank on the front.  F2600 requested Station 26-4's FAST team respond to the scene.

A woman was home at the time of the fire.  She was able to escape to a neighbor's trailer and dial 911.

E26-35 arrived on scene first and began the initial attack with the engine's deluge gun while two 1 3/4" hand lines were being deployed.

L23-36 arrived next, began supplying E26-35 with water, and supplied additional scene lighting.  E26-34 arrived and also began supplying E26-35 with water.

Once the fire was sufficiently knocked down, Station 26-4's FAST Team was recalled.  This occurred prior to their arrival.

T26-29 and E26-25 arrived shortly thereafter and T26-29 supplied E26-34 with water.

After the fire was placed under control, L23-36 performed salvage and overhaul operations and Station 26-2 units were placed back in service.

During the incident, Station 26-5 was called to cover Station 26-3.  While at the station, E26-53 was requested to respond to a CO alarm activation, also within Station 26-3's First Due Area.

Absecon EMS stood by for the duration of the incident.

No civilian or Fire Dept. injuries were reported.

The unit was a total loss.  The fire is under investigation by the Galloway Twp Fire Investigator's Office.

Stations 26-4 and 26-3 were on scene for approximately 2.5 hours.

All units were back in service shortly after 04:15 hours.

Pitney Rd. Motor Vehicle Accident:

30 DECEMBER 2006 - At approximately 0400 hours, Stations 26-4 and 26-3 were dispatched to Pitney Rd. just south of the Collins Rd. for a reported Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) with entrapment.

C26-40, E26-46, C26-300, R26-38, U26-37, and E26-35 responded.

Upon arrival, C26-40 assumed Incident Command and confirmed the MVA.  C26-300 assumed Extrication Command and informed incoming rescue units that a door removal and dash push would be required.

R26-38 stabilized and de-energized the vehicle.  Both driver's side doors were "popped" open and then cut off.  Due to the impingement of the dashboard on the victim, R26-38 pushed the dashboard off the victim.  The vehicle's roof was removed as well.

Station 26-4 units pulled and charged a 1 3/4" line to provide fire protection for the extrication team.   They also provided post incident lighting.

The victim was then backboarded, removed from the vehicle, and transported to the hospital by Galloway Twp EMS.

Galloway Twp PD provided excellent traffic control and safe work zone for the duration of the incident.

Stations 26-4 and 26-3 were on scene for approximately 60 minutes.

All units were back in service shortly after 0500 hours.
